Northern Independent Living is a user-led social enterprise that promotes and supports the development of independent living for disabled people of all ages across the North West of England, ensuring that they have choice, control, and freedom over their own lives.

We support the sustainable development of the independent living movement and infrastructure in the North West, including the development of user-led organisations and centres for independent living by providing information, advice, advocacy and support.

We promote the ethos that disabled people are best placed to describe their own needs, that they make valuable contributions to society, and deserve equal opportunities with regards to living, working and participating in the local community and beyond.

What is independent living?

The independent living philosophy is supported by a movement of disabled people and their advocates across the world who strive to achieve self-respect and equal opportunities in society. We also seek to dispel commonly conceived views about people with disabilities which may negatively affect and restrict disabled people’s opportunities in the areas of education, work, and family.
